US midterms hand Democrats control of Congress in major rebuke to Trump

Democrats have won majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 US midterm elections, delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump and setting up divided government for the final two years of his term.

Reuters reported that Democrats flipped more than two dozen Republican-held House seats. In Texas, they captured a Senate seat and the governor’s office; Kansas elected its first Democratic senator in almost a century. The Associated Press reported a statewide Democratic sweep in Texas, where Gina Hinojosa is set to become the state’s first Latina governor.

Voters focused heavily on the cost of living, tariffs and the war with Iran. Trump accepted the outcome but warned he could veto legislation he considers extreme. With the new Congress taking office in January, Democrats are expected to intensify oversight of the administration and gain leverage over legislation and appointments.
