Shopping Carts for Dogs: Italian Supermarkets Introduce a Novel Idea

ITALY – Some supermarkets in Italy allow customers to bring their dogs inside while shopping, using specially designed carts that provide a dedicated space for the animals.

Footage broadcast by German television channel RTL shows dogs sitting in their own shopping carts as their owners move through supermarket aisles. The unusual arrangement offers a different approach to shopping with pets.

Could the idea work in Germany?

In Germany, dogs are generally not permitted in areas where food is sold because of food hygiene regulations. Legally recognized assistance dogs that meet the relevant requirements are an exception.

Some supermarkets in Italy have introduced special transport solutions, including dedicated shopping carts or carriers, to accommodate dogs under certain conditions. However, the rules vary between individual stores and remain subject to applicable hygiene requirements.

Shopping carts designed for dogs offer an unusual way to make everyday shopping easier for pet owners. Whether a similar concept could become common in Germany remains uncertain.
