The European Parliament has awarded the 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its officials. Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the decision in Strasbourg on Thursday, recognising the court’s work in upholding international law and justice.
The award comes as the Hague-based court faces mounting political pressure. US President Donald Trump’s administration has imposed sanctions on the ICC following its arrest warrants for senior Israeli figures. The prize signals the European Union’s support for international institutions and the court’s independent mandate.
ICC President Tomoko Akane said the recognition was particularly significant amid what she described as unprecedented challenges. The award ceremony is scheduled for the European Parliament’s December plenary session in Strasbourg.
