The German Army plans to establish an independent drone regiment in 2027, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced during a military technology exercise in Bergen. The new formation is intended to bring together capabilities involving unmanned systems, including reconnaissance and the interception of hostile drones.

According to the Bundeswehr, the regiment will become part of the 10th Panzer Division. The army also plans to begin expanding the use of unmanned systems in selected infantry, reconnaissance and armoured units around the turn of 2026 and 2027.

The announcement reflects the growing importance of drones on modern battlefields and the need to combine surveillance, operational capabilities and protection against enemy systems. The Bundeswehr says the new regiment will complement—not replace—the integration of unmanned systems into existing formations.

The plan was announced on 2 October during an experimental series at the Bergen training area.
