Germany is increasing its humanitarian assistance to Yemen by a further €10 million, bringing the total announced support to €38 million. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the additional funding after meeting his Yemeni counterpart, Afrah Abdulaziz Al-Zouba, in Berlin.
According to the German government’s information portal deutschland.de, citing dpa, Wadephul urged the Iran-backed Houthi movement to immediately stop attacks on civilians in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. He said lasting peace could only be achieved through a political solution and that Germany was prepared to support that process.
The conflict in Yemen, which began in 2014, has contributed to one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The internationally recognised government has been fighting the Houthis for years, and recent reports indicate that violence has intensified again.
The impact of the additional funding will depend in part on whether humanitarian organisations can safely reach people in need. The announcement comes as the country continues to face extensive humanitarian needs after years of conflict.
