Shop Windows Smashed in Cologne City Centre; Police Rule Out Gunfire

COLOGNE – Several shop windows were damaged in Cologne’s Old Town during the night leading into Sunday, 25 October. The marks initially looked like bullet holes, raising fears of another shooting. Police said, however, that no shots had been fired in this incident and that the windows had apparently been smashed with a stone.

At least twelve impact marks were visible across several shopfronts in the Gürzenichstraße area, with broken glass scattered on the pavement. The damage caused concern amid a recent series of shootings and explosive attacks targeting businesses and residential properties in Cologne.

Suspect handed over to police

According to the available information, security staff at a venue on Kleine Sandkaul restrained a person who was causing a disturbance at around 1 a.m. and handed the individual over to police. The person is being treated as a suspect.

The motive for the property damage remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.

Police have been investigating a series of attacks on shops, restaurants and homes in Cologne in recent weeks. Authorities have stressed, however, that the damage in this latest incident was not caused by gunfire.
