EU launches alliance to build markets for bio-based materials

The European Commission has launched the Bio-based Europe Alliance, a voluntary initiative intended to connect producers and suppliers of bio-based materials with European buyers and public authorities. More than 100 stakeholders have already joined, the Commission said after the initiative was unveiled at the Global Bioeconomy Summit in Dublin on 21 October.

The alliance is designed to address a commercial barrier facing bio-based businesses: promising materials can struggle to move beyond research and demonstration when demand is uncertain and potential customers have limited visibility of available products. By bringing buyers and suppliers together, the initiative aims to make demand more predictable and help companies attract investment for production facilities and scale-up.

The work will cover materials and technologies that could reduce reliance on fossil-based inputs, including bio-based plastics, fibres, chemicals and construction products, as well as biorefineries and advanced fermentation. The alliance is voluntary, and its participating organisations will develop its activities together. It does not itself create a new legal requirement for businesses; it is intended to complement future EU measures and efforts to improve access to finance.
