Swedish climate scholar Andreas Malm says British authorities have blocked his planned entry to the United Kingdom ahead of a London event where he was due to appear alongside Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, which is proscribed under UK law.
Reuters and The Guardian reported that Malm’s Electronic Travel Authorisation was cancelled. The notice cited a public-good ground but did not provide a detailed public explanation. Malm believes the decision may be linked to the event; that connection has not been confirmed by the Home Office, which declined to discuss individual cases.
The planned panel is due to address the consequences of the ban on Palestine Action. The entry decision comes as the group’s proscription is also facing a legal challenge in the UK Supreme Court. The case raises questions about immigration powers and the space available for academic and political debate, while the government has not publicly set out the specific grounds for Malm’s case.
