The United States is reducing staffing at its embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates after intelligence warnings of increased threats to American personnel from Iran and Iran-backed groups, The Associated Press reported on Saturday, October 24.
The missions remain open but are operating with reduced staffing. U.S. officials said personnel at the four locations were not being ordered to leave; the step is a precautionary response to what officials described as elevated security risks.
The move follows separate orders for nonessential U.S. personnel and family members to depart Saudi Arabia. Officials said the embassy drawdowns were not linked to a specific decision to launch new U.S. or Israeli strikes on Iran, while diplomatic efforts to restart talks remain stalled.
The developments underline the security pressure around the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, where threats against U.S. forces and commercial shipping have added to regional tensions.
