TSMC posts record profit as AI chip demand drives 69% jump

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, reported record third-quarter earnings as demand for processors used in artificial intelligence continued to grow.

TSMC said net profit for the July-to-September period rose 69% from a year earlier to 763.1 billion Taiwan dollars, equivalent to about $23.6 billion. The result exceeded analysts’ expectations and marked another record for the company.

The company manufactures advanced semiconductors for major technology firms, including Nvidia and Apple. Demand for AI accelerators and the infrastructure needed to run generative AI services has become a key driver of its growth.

AI investment supports chip demand

The results underline how spending on artificial intelligence continues to support the semiconductor industry, even as investors have become more cautious about technology valuations and the pace at which AI investments will generate returns.

TSMC is expanding its manufacturing capacity to meet demand for increasingly advanced chips. Its performance is closely watched across the technology sector because the company supplies processors used in data centres, smartphones and other computing devices.

Outlook remains tied to technology spending

Strong demand for advanced manufacturing has helped TSMC maintain its lead over competitors. However, the wider industry remains exposed to changes in global economic conditions, export controls and the possibility that technology companies could slow their spending.

The latest results provide further evidence of the scale of investment flowing into AI infrastructure. Whether that pace can be sustained will remain a central question for semiconductor manufacturers and their customers in the coming quarters.
