Germany sees startup boom as AI and industrial malaise reshape business

Germany is experiencing a startup boom even as its traditional industrial economy struggles with weak growth and structural pressure.

A record 3,000 startups were launched in Germany in the first half of 2026, according to figures cited by Reuters. Around one third of the new companies are focused on artificial intelligence.

The increase has been supported by greater availability of capital, rapid advances in AI and a weaker labour market that is pushing some highly skilled workers away from traditional industries and towards entrepreneurship.

The trend is particularly notable as major German industrial companies face difficult conditions. New startups are seeking to use technology to modernise production, reduce costs and develop new business models in sectors ranging from healthcare to fashion.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government introduced a Startup and Scaleup Strategy in July, including measures aimed at reducing bureaucracy and attracting private investment. Germany nevertheless remains behind the United States in AI financing, highlighting the challenge of turning the current startup momentum into long-term economic growth.
