The trial over the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines is scheduled to open at Hamburg’s Higher Regional Court on Wednesday, October 14. A Ukrainian national identified by the court as Serhii K. is accused of involvement in the sabotage.

The court admitted the indictment in September and said the preliminary findings provided sufficient grounds to suspect the defendant of participation in offences including causing an explosion, damaging infrastructure and disrupting public services. These are allegations to be examined in court; the defendant has not been convicted.

The explosions in September 2022 ruptured three of the four pipeline sections linking Russia and Germany beneath the Baltic Sea, bringing the project’s gas deliveries to an end. The attack has remained the subject of competing claims and investigations, with its perpetrators and broader responsibility becoming a major geopolitical issue.

The Hamburg court has scheduled 16 hearing dates through December 17, with further sessions expected in early 2027. The proceedings are likely to draw attention beyond Germany because the case touches on energy security, the war in Ukraine and the political relationship between Berlin and Kyiv.
