EU rules on environmental claims enter application

New European Union rules on environmental claims and sustainability information for consumers entered into application on September 27. The measures set tighter requirements for businesses using broad environmental statements in commercial communication.

The European Commission says claims such as “green” or “environmentally friendly” should not be presented without a basis that can be demonstrated. The new framework also places restrictions on unreliable voluntary sustainability labels and certain practices that can give consumers a misleading impression about a product’s environmental performance.

The rules are part of the EU’s Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition framework. Member states were required to transpose the directive into national law by March 27, 2026.

The Commission says the changes are intended to give consumers more reliable information while making environmental claims more transparent and comparable across the European single market.
