The European Union has renewed its sanctions against around 3,000 Russian individuals and entities, extending the measures for three years while removing billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the list.
Reuters reported on September 22 that the decision followed negotiations among EU member states. France and Luxembourg supported removing the two businessmen from the sanctions list, while Ukraine criticised the move.
The decision illustrates the continuing political and legal debate inside the EU over the bloc’s Russia sanctions regime.
