EU Commission unveils five-point plan to strengthen external borders

The European Commission has unveiled a five-point plan designed to strengthen the European Union’s ability to prevent and respond to sudden, large-scale irregular arrivals at its external borders.

The package focuses on earlier warning and information-sharing mechanisms, stronger support for member states facing border pressure and a new European Emergency Response Framework.

The Commission also wants to reinforce Frontex, the EU border agency, including its capacity for rapid deployment and its role in returns and cooperation with partner countries.

Another part of the plan targets migrant-smuggling networks. The Commission is calling for stronger action against smugglers, including a sanctions framework that could allow asset freezes and travel bans.

The proposal also places greater emphasis on cooperation with countries of origin and transit, legal pathways and improved situational awareness. The Commission said irregular crossings remain at their lowest level since 2021, while recent developments have highlighted the need for stronger emergency preparedness at the EU’s external borders.
