European Union leaders and senior officials from several member states have expressed solidarity with Spain after two high-speed trains collided in the province of Toledo. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent condolences following the disaster.

Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE reported that von der Leyen said Europe was mourning alongside the victims’ families. Metsola expressed sympathy with the relatives of those killed and wished the injured a full recovery. Macron conveyed France’s solidarity with Spain.

Spanish parties suspend campaign events

Most Spanish political parties cancelled their campaign events scheduled for Wednesday ahead of the general election planned for 29 November. According to RTVE, Vox was the exception. Parties also issued messages of condolence for the victims and their families.

The crash near Urda in Toledo province involved a Renfe AVE train and a high-speed service operated by private company Iryo. The latest confirmed figure from authorities is at least 30 deaths, while the regional government has warned that the toll could rise. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
