AI is making it harder for young people to enter Germany’s job market

Avrupa Birliği ve dijital rekabet

Artificial intelligence is increasingly changing the German labour market, and young people are finding it harder to secure entry-level positions, according to a new report by German public broadcaster ARD’s Tagesschau.

Companies are using AI to take over or support a growing number of tasks that were traditionally handled by junior employees. This is raising concerns that some of the jobs that once provided a first step into professional life could become less available.

Career services at German universities are already seeing the effects. Students report difficulties finding internships and entry-level positions despite submitting numerous applications. The pressure is particularly relevant in fields where routine research, analysis and administrative work can increasingly be supported by AI tools.

Experts say the challenge is not simply the disappearance of jobs but a transformation of the skills employers expect. Universities, companies and policymakers are therefore facing growing pressure to ensure that young workers can gain practical experience while developing skills that complement artificial intelligence.
